Lesson #1.2: My Online Tracks
What will we learn?
1. Recall that all information shared online leaves a digital footprint or trail that is permanent.
2. Judge types of information that is safe to put online.
3. Apply safe internet use to the JOY Digital Citizenship poster.

Digital FootprintsYour digital footprint is the sum of all your information left behind from your digital participation. It includes your TV, mobile phone, and internet use. Your personal information, preferences, searches, messaging, and any other online activity makes up your digital footprint.
We can mistakenly think that this information can easily be cleared or deleted. In reality, digital footprints are like footprints cast in cement. It can be very difficult to change or erase your online information and data. So we must always think about what we are posting online! The focus for the primary student includes understanding:
|
I. Introduction:Invite the students to share their answers to this question:
How is the internet like a bulletin board? (Slide 1 of Mimio Presentation)
Ask the students to turn and talk with a partner to answer the next question: What if all the information in our classroom was posted in the grocery store? (Slide 2 of Mimio Presentation) You can watch the video "What is Personal Information" to help students review the concept of personal vs. private information. Reinforce that the internet is a PUBLIC space. Just like we follow rules to protect ourselves, we have to know what is safe to post about ourselves. If we make a mistake, the trail is permanent and is very difficult to remove or take back. |

III. JOYful Digital CitizensCreate a chart that outlines information about ourselves that is safe or unsafe to post online. Use the student handout and/or record the information in the Mimio presentation.
Using the digital citizen poster as a reference, have students consider what should or shouldn't be posted online when they think about Jesus and Others. We aren't just responsible for ourselves. BYOT Classrooms: If you are considering BYOT in the classroom with the young students, you would likely need to include additional information for the parents as these students are very young and likely responsibility with the devices from home may be a concern. Review the "BYOT Acceptable Use Policy" along with the Digital Citizenship poster so students can understand what is required of them when they bring their device to school. These are the "rules" of BYOT. This policy should be sent home to be reviewed with parents. This post outlines the introduction of BYOT in the kindergarten classroom. |
