Defining Digital FootprintsA digital footprint refers to the digital trail left behind by a person as they interact online. Blogging, instant messaging, using internet sites, and performing internet searches are all examples of activities which contribute to a person's digital footprint. An important thing to keep in mind is that a digital footprint is PERMANENT. It can be very difficult, if not impossible to remove or erase content once it has been posted online. It is for this reason, that we must always think about how or online behaviours will affect ourselves and those around us.

I. IntroductionBegin with the Media Smarts "Are You Web Aware?" survey. This can be given using the PDF document, or as a class using the MimioStudio Notebook file and MimioVote devices. Discuss the results of each question as a class.
II. Share and CompareProvide each student with a copy of a footprint. Have the students write down all of the online activities they do in a week. Students should then exchange with a classmate and discuss the similarities and differences.
Watch the "Digital Footprint Intro" from Common Sense Media. After watching, have students discuss any "Did you know?" facts which may have surprised them. As a class discuss the online activities they listed as part of the footprint activity. Create a class "Digital Footprint" word cloud using Tagxedo.com. Under the "Shapes" option, choose the image of the footprint. Next, go into the "Load" option at the top of the screen. In the "Enter Text" box, enter all of the online activities students identified earlier in the lesson. In the "Word/Layout Options" select "Layout" > "Allow Replication" >"Yes". Feel free to make any other creative adjustments you wish. When you are finished, go to "Save/Share". Save the image as a 1MP JPG to your computer. You can then choose to print and display the image in your classroom. As an extension activity, each student could create their own personal Tagxedo footprint. III. JOYful Digital CitizensAs a class, explain that we follow rules to be good students, daughters, catholics. These rules help to keep everyone safe and happy. To remain safe an happy in the digital world, we must also follow rules. There are three areas to keep in mind when doing anything online:
The Regina Catholic Schools Online Behaviour infographic lists a number of positive online behaviours. Can you think of any more? In our next lesson, we will look at each of these areas in more detail. |
